Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of two-dimensional Dirac materials on substrates with a band gap

چکیده

In this paper we show that conventional current-voltage spectroscopy can provide quantitative information on the dispersion relation of low-energy electrons monoelemental group-IV two-dimensional (2D) Dirac materials provided (1) 2D material is placed a substrate with band gap and (2) density states scanning tunneling microscopy tip constant. We have derived an expression for differential conductivity gap. The scales as $|E\ensuremath{-}{E}_{D}|{e}^{b|E\ensuremath{-}{E}_{D}|},$ rather than commonly assumed $|E\ensuremath{-}{E}_{D}|$ scaling, where $E$ ${E}_{D}$ refer to energy point, respectively. parameter $b$ inversely proportional Fermi velocity.

Tinene: a two-dimensional Dirac material with a 72 meV band gap.

Dirac materials have attracted great interest for both fundamental research and electronic devices due to their unique band structures, but the usual near zero bandgap of graphene results in a poor on-off ratio in the corresponding transistors. Here, we report on tinene, monolayer gray tin, as a new two-dimensional material with both Dirac characteristics and a remarkable 72 meV bandgap based o...

Band offsets of InGaP/GaAs heterojunctions by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy are used to study InGaP/GaAs heterojunctions with InGaAs-like interfaces. Band offsets are probed using conductance spectra, with tip-induced band bending accounted for using 3-dimensional electrostatic potential simulations together with a planar computation of the tunnel current. Curve fitting of theory to experiment is performed. Using an InGaP ...

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy study of the proximity effect in a disordered two-dimensional metal.

The proximity effect between a superconductor and a highly diffusive two-dimensional metal is revealed in a scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiment. The in situ elaborated samples consist of superconducting single crystalline Pb islands interconnected by a nonsuperconducting atomically thin disordered Pb wetting layer. In the vicinity of each superconducting island the wetting layer acquires...

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of graphene on graphite.

We report low temperature high magnetic field scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy of graphene flakes on graphite that exhibit the structural and electronic properties of graphene decoupled from the substrate. Pronounced peaks in the tunneling spectra develop with increasing field revealing a Landau level sequence that provides a direct way to identify graphene and to determine the de...

Band Gap Engineering of Two-Dimensional Nitrogene

In our previous study, we have predicted the novel two-dimensional honeycomb monolayers of pnictogen. In particular, the structure and properties of the honeycomb monolayer of nitrogen, which we call nitrogene, are very unusual. In this paper, we make an in-depth investigation of its electronic structure. We find that the band structure of nitrogene can be engineered in several ways: controllin...
